kayamba · may 2024babani soundsystem is not a band. it is a force and a concept, initiated by avneesh, and it has been carried by musicians who gave it their sound, on stage and in the studio. their names stay on the records, with respect. the force is still active. who carries it next is not said.
menwar is the parrain. he features on some of the records, and some of their melodies are borrowed from his.
babani is the state of trance reached when the ravann speaks. the soundsystem takes that state on stage: the ternary pulse of sega and maloya, moutia and seggae, driven through synths, samplers and drum machines, with the voices of the indian ocean in the middle of it.
the project took the mauritian stages in 2017, blessed by menwar, who plays the role of parrain to the whole babani project. first single zistwar fer per in 2019, then dan bwa and trwa batan for fpe records, touni minwi for on the corner, and in december 2024 lélou, written with menwar himself.
the set has travelled to réunion, paris, mayotte and the dance floors of mauritius. in october 2024 it played boiler room's first mauritian session, system: mauritius, in port louis.
